The laser, as well as other important examples from physics, show that coherent or harmonious collective functioning can be established through a principle called the Field Effect. The principle of the Field Effect establishes that it is not necessary to act individually on each individual constituent of a system, but that the system can be handled in one stroke at the collective level. Therefore, the principle of the Field Effect facilitates the generation of coherence enormously. Furthermore, a Field Effect is characterized by the fact that it is not necessary to manipulate the constituents on the superficial, material level, but rather to utilize the abstract and more powerful level of a Field.

In the case of the laser, this Field Effect is mediated by the electromagnetic field that resonates within the laser. Maharishi's supreme system of defense also utilizes the principle of the Field Effect in order to create coherent collective functioning in society—however, it utilizes the Field Effect at the most fundamental level of Natural Law and therefore is extremely powerful in establishing coherent collective functioning in society.
