The Institute inspired and helped organize the first-ever bipartisan, bicameral U.S. congressional caucusthe Congressional Prevention Coalitionthree years ago. This widely attended, ongoing caucus serves as a Congressional forum for examining innovative, prevention-oriented solutions to Americas critical social and economic problems. It provides an unprecedented opportunity for high-level consideration of the proven preventive approaches supported by the Institute.
In response to the Institutes focus on preventive health care, the Coalition invited Institute Director Dr. John Hagelin to join U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher and U.S. Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa), along with other noted speakers, at a Coalition forum entitled Achieving Parity in Health Care for Minority Populations: Prevention of Hypertension and Heart Disease. Since that forum, the Institute has continued to help coordinate health care studies of heart disease and hypertension among African-Americans, as well as studies of specific prevention-oriented health care programs that show promise for alleviating disease and increasing longevity. |
